What the test measures: the 12 archetypes
The twelve archetypes group into four drives. Most people score highest on one archetype with a strong secondary, and the interesting information is usually in the gap between the two.
| Archetype | Drive | Core belief |
|---|---|---|
| The Innocent | Leave a mark on the world | Life can be simple and paradise is possible |
| The Hero | Leave a mark on the world | Where there's a will, there's a way |
| The Everyman | Leave a mark on the world | All people are created equal |
| The Caregiver | Leave a mark on the world | Love your neighbor as yourself |
| The Ruler | Provide structure to the world | Power isn't everything, it's the only thing |
| The Creator | Provide structure to the world | If you can imagine it, you can create it |
| The Sage | Provide structure to the world | The truth will set you free |
| The Magician | Provide structure to the world | I make things happen |
| The Lover | Connect with others | You're the only one |
| The Jester | Connect with others | You only live once |
| The Explorer | Yearn for paradise | Don't fence me in |
| The Rebel | Yearn for paradise | Rules are made to be broken |
How the test works
- 1
Sixteen single-select questions. They ask what you actually do under pressure rather than what you value in the abstract, because the behaviour is what reveals the pattern.
- 2
Scoring across all twelve. Every answer weights several archetypes, so the result is a ranking rather than a single label. Your dominant archetype is the highest weighted total.
- 3
Your birth date is read alongside it. The free analysis combines the archetype result with numerological positions derived from your birth date, which is what produces the specific reading rather than a generic type description.
What a result looks like
Example, not a real reading
Dominant: The Caregiver. Secondary: The Ruler.
The pattern: you take responsibility early and thoroughly, which makes you the person everything routes through. The shadow expression is a hidden ledger. You give without stating a cost, the cost accumulates anyway, and it surfaces later as resentment that looks disproportionate to whatever triggered it. The stall point is the conversation you do not have.
What this test is not
It is a structured self-report, not a clinical or diagnostic instrument. It measures how you answered today, and people answer differently in different periods of their lives. That is a limitation of every self-report personality measure, including the well-known ones, and it is worth saying plainly rather than claiming an accuracy no questionnaire of this kind has.
What it is good for is naming something you already half-recognise. A useful result reads as uncomfortable and familiar at the same time. If you want the longer discussion of validity, we wrote about how accurate Jungian archetype tests actually are.
Common questions
Is the archetype test free?+
Yes. The test and the report it produces cost nothing. There is a paid 90-day protocol offered afterwards, but it is entirely optional and the analysis you receive does not depend on buying it.
Do I need to create an account or sign up?+
You do not create a password or an account to take the test. At the end you enter your first name, your birth date and your email address, because the report is generated from your birth date and delivered to your inbox. Nothing else is required.
How long does the archetype test take?+
About three minutes. There are 16 pattern questions, then three short fields for your name, birth date and email. The questions are single-select, so there is nothing to write.
Is this test based on Carl Jung?+
It uses the twelve-archetype framework that developed out of Jung's work on archetypes and the collective unconscious, later systematised by writers such as Carol Pearson and Margaret Mark. Jung himself never published a fixed list of twelve, so this is a framework built on his ideas rather than a direct transcription of them.
How accurate is an archetype test?+
An archetype test is a structured self-report, not a clinical instrument. It reflects how you answered on the day, which is genuinely useful for spotting a pattern you already half-suspect, and it is not a diagnosis. Treat the result as a hypothesis to check against your own behaviour.
What do I actually get at the end?+
A free written analysis naming your dominant archetype, the shadow expression that comes with it, and the specific place that pattern tends to stall your progress. It also maps your birth date to a set of numerological positions, which is where the archetype and the date are read together.
