Matrix of Destiny compatibility means calculating each person's chart on its own, then reading which arcana repeat across the two charts and which ones sit in obvious tension. It does not produce a percentage, a match score, or a verdict about whether a relationship should continue. What it produces is shared vocabulary: a way of naming what each person tends to do under pressure, and where those two sets of tendencies are most likely to collide.
That distinction matters more here than in almost any other use of the system. A single chart is self-reflection. Two charts read side by side become a description of another person, and a description hardens into an accusation very easily. The method below is deliberately built to resist that.
01What a two-chart comparison actually compares
Every Matrix of Destiny position reduces to a number between 1 and 22, not to a single digit. Any sum above 22 has its digits added together until it lands inside that range, and there it stops. This is the most common error people carry over from other systems: life path numerology reduces all the way down to one digit, preserving 11, 22 and 33 only at the final total, while matrix positions live in the 1 to 22 range of the major arcana. For a compatibility read you do not need all 22 positions. Five values per person carry most of the useful signal, and keeping the set small is what stops the exercise from becoming an unfalsifiable story.
02The five values, and the three comparisons
For each person, calculate:
- Day - the birth day, reduced to 1 to 22.
- Month - the birth month, already inside range.
- Year - the digits of the birth year summed, then reduced.
- Purpose point - day plus month plus year, reduced.
- Centre - all four of the above summed, then reduced.
Then make three comparisons across the pair: the shared arcana (any number appearing in both charts), the relationship arcana (the two centres added and reduced, a commonly used approach rather than a fixed standard), and the sharpest contrast (the position where the two charts hold the most opposed energies).
One naming note before the example. The numbering below follows the Rider-Waite-Smith order, where 8 is Strength and 11 is Justice. Many matrix practitioners use the Marseille order, which swaps those two. Neither is more correct, but check which one your destiny matrix calculator uses before interpreting anything, because 8 and 11 read very differently.

04Reading the overlap honestly
A shared arcana is not proof of harmony. The Hermit appearing on both sides of this pair means both people have the same default move under strain: go quiet, go inward, come back once the thing has been thought through. Two people who share that move rarely fight loudly. They also rarely repair quickly, because nobody in the room is the one who reopens the conversation. An overlap describes a shared reflex, and shared reflexes amplify rather than balance.
This is where a two-chart read earns its keep. It is much easier to say "we both go quiet, so one of us has to name a re-entry point" than to say "you always shut me out." The love position in the matrix works on the same principle applied inside a single chart: it describes an inherited pattern of relating, not a person to blame.
05Reading the friction
The Empress against Justice is a real structural tension, and it is worth stating in behavioural terms rather than symbolic ones. An Empress position tends to give first and count later, treats generosity as the proof of care, and experiences an itemised account of who did what as coldness. A Justice position tends to count first, treats proportion as the proof of care, and experiences unmeasured giving as a debt being quietly created.
Neither one is the healthy version. Both are describing the same wish, to know the relationship is safe, through incompatible evidence. The friction is not the problem. The unspoken assumption that the other person is using the same evidence is the problem.
The relationship arcana, 20, Judgement, sits well with that reading. Judgement is about review and honest accounting, which is exactly the repair mechanism a Hermit-to-Hermit pair with an Empress-Justice split would have to build deliberately, because neither of them will produce it spontaneously.
06What a two-chart comparison cannot decide
This is the part most compatibility content leaves out, so state it flatly.
Two charts cannot tell you whether either person is safe to be close to. Contempt, coercion, dishonesty and violence do not appear as an arcana, and no combination of numbers should ever be used to explain away behaviour you would otherwise leave over.
They cannot tell you whether the relationship will last. Duration is a function of repair capacity, timing, circumstance and choice, none of which are encoded in a birth date.
They cannot rank one pairing against another. Any arcana compatibility calculator that returns a percentage has invented its own denominator. There is no underlying dataset from which such a percentage could be computed.
And they cannot tell you which of you is right during a specific argument. The comparison operates at the level of tendency, not incident. The moment it is used to settle who was correct on Tuesday, it has stopped being self-reflection and become a weapon with a decorative frame.
What it can do is give two people language for a pattern they have already lived through several times without being able to describe it. That is a smaller claim, and a far more useful one.
07Using it as a conversation rather than a verdict
Run both charts, then have each person read their own five positions aloud and say which ones feel accurate and which do not. Disagreement is data. If one person's centre reads as obviously wrong to them, that mismatch deserves more attention than a neat overlap, because it usually points at something being performed rather than felt.
If you want a second angle on the same pair, numerology compatibility and life path number compatibility run on different arithmetic and often surface different friction points, while archetype compatibility approaches the question psychologically rather than numerically. Where several methods independently point at the same tension, that tension is probably real. Where only one does, treat it as a hypothesis.
