How the life path number is calculated
Add the digits of the day, the digits of the month and the digits of the year separately. Add those three results together. Then keep adding the digits of the total until one digit is left, unless the total passes through 11, 22 or 33 on the way down.
Worked example: April 14, 1988
- Day 14: 1 + 4 = 5
- Month 4 (April): 4
- Year 1988: 1 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 26
- Total: 5 + 4 + 26 = 35
- Reduce: 3 + 5 = 8. Life path 8.
Worked example with a master number: September 2, 1980
- Day 2: 2
- Month 9 (September): 9
- Year 1980: 1 + 9 + 8 + 0 = 18
- Total: 2 + 9 + 18 = 29
- Reduce: 2 + 9 = 11. That is a master number, so it stops here. Life path 11.
Master numbers 11, 22 and 33
When a total lands on 11, 22 or 33 it is not reduced further. Those numbers are read as carrying the themes of 2, 4 and 6 at higher intensity, which is why the calculator shows them rather than flattening them. The guide to master numbers covers where they can appear and how each one is read.
Calculators do not all agree here. Some reduce the day, month and year to single digits before adding them. That never changes the final single digit, but it changes whether a date counts as a master number for about one birth date in seven. In the example above, reducing first gives 2 + 9 + 9 = 20, which is a 2, not an 11. When your date is one of those, the calculator says so.

Your life path and your year

Why does another calculator give me a different life path number?

There are two common methods. One adds the digits of the full date and keeps any master number reached on the way. The other reduces the day, month and year to single digits first. Across every birth date from 1900 to 2020 they never disagree on the final single digit, but they disagree about whether the number is a master number for about 15% of dates. This calculator uses the first method and tells you when the second one would give a different answer.
Can my life path number change?

No. It comes from your full birth date, so it stays the same for life. The numbers that do change are the time cycles: your personal year changes every January, and your personal month changes every month.
What is the difference between a life path number and a personal year number?

Your life path describes a theme across your whole life. Your personal year describes the next twelve months. It is calculated from your birth month, your birth day and the current year, so it moves through a nine-year cycle.
Is life path 11 the same as life path 2?

They share a base. 11 reduces to 2, so the cooperation and sensitivity themes of the 2 apply, with more intensity and more pressure. Many numerologists write it as 11/2 for that reason.
Is numerology scientific?
