How the life path number is calculated

The day, the month and the year are each reduced to a single digit first, then added together, then reduced again. Reducing separately before combining avoids the errors that come from reducing too early. Someone born April 14, 1988 gets day 1+4 = 5, month 4, year 1+9+8+8 = 26 which reduces to 8. The total 5+4+8 = 17 reduces to 8: life path 8.

The exception is the master numbers. If a total lands on 11, 22 or 33 it is not reduced further, because those numbers are read as carrying the themes of 2, 4 and 6 at higher intensity. The calculator above stops on them rather than flattening them into a single digit.

A life path number describes a recurring theme, not a fixed fate. The fuller explanation of the system is in what is my life path number, and if you want to know what your current year is asking of you rather than your whole life, that is a different number: the personal year, which rotates annually. The pattern you actually repeat inside any given year is a psychological question, and the free archetype quiz maps that in about three minutes.
